28th April - 2nd May 2025 - An unforgettable week at Mill on the Brue
This term, Year 5 embarked on a truly memorable residential trip to Mill on the Brue – and what an incredible adventure it was! Over the course of the week, the children took part in an exciting and varied programme of activities, including the thrilling zip wire, leap of faith, canoeing, an escape room, and even pizza making. They also had the opportunity to care for animals and feed them, deepening their connection with nature. This is just a few of the activities during the week!
A key focus of the week was sustainability. The children learned about food waste, garden-to-table eating, and eco-conscious living, with one group proudly earning the title of “Zero Heroes” for producing no food waste at any meal all week – a fantastic achievement!
Beyond the activities, the trip was a powerful opportunity for personal growth. The children showed tremendous independence, resilience, and team spirit as they navigated a full week away from home. Whether they were tackling new challenges or supporting each other through them, they consistently impressed us with their courage, kindness, and determination.
We are incredibly proud of every single one of them – they were an inspiration to us all and should feel immensely proud of all they achieved.

3rd March 2025 - Tennis
This term, one of our PE focuses is tennis. In the past couple of weeks, we have looked at developing racket technique - the correct technique needed to apply an accurate forehand or backhand shot with control and volley - the volley is a shot which is played before the ball bounces and are played when we are close to the net. Year 5 put a lot of effort into perfecting these skills and we look forward to putting it altogether in a match at the end of the term.
4th February 2025 - Gymnastics
This term, Year 5 have worked incredibly hard in gymnastics, and it has been a pleasure to see their confidence and skills grow! They have shown bravery, teamwork, and trust while mastering some tricky counter balance and counter tension balances.
In gymnastics, counter balance is when two partners support each other’s weight to create a stable shape, while counter tension relies on pulling against each other to maintain balance. Both require excellent communication and control—qualities our Year 5s demonstrated brilliantly!
Well done to all the children for their fantastic effort and determination!
9th January 2025 - Music
Year 5 have been learning all about the Solfa Scale in their music lessons. They learnt the pitch of each note, its name and its hand signal and looked at how these related to written music. They then put 5 of these notes together to learn all about pentatonic scales and learnt two different songs from this. They worked in groups to put together performances of these songs, which were brilliant and very enjoyable to watch. Bravo Year 5!
28th November 2024 - Science
Year 5 have been learning all about different forces in Science. To help them discover the impact of drag force on objects with different surface areas they conducted an experiment using windmills. The children made the windmills themselves, which proved a very tricky task. Well done Year 5 for showing such great resilience and perseverance.
21st November 2024 - Art Sculptures
In Y5, we are so excited to show the final Roman vases/jugs that the children have sculpted in their Art lessons. The the form was made from half a plastic bottle, newspaper and modroc. The children were tasked with making an Ancient Roman form but to design and decorate with a contemporary/modern pattern. We think they all did brilliantly!
25th October 2024 - Performance poetry
Y5 have spent the past week practising the nonsense poem 'Jabberwocky' by Lewis Caroll in small groups. Today, they performed to their classes - each group had their own unique take on the poem which resulted in a whole range of different performances. We were so impressed by the prosody, intonation and expression the children used.

15th October 2024 - DT Sewing
Y5 have completed their DT unit this term with the creation of their up-cycled, sustainable Christmas tree decorations. The children all worked so hard and helped each other to be successful. The brief had them including 3 different stitches - running stitch, blanket stitch and back stitch. We think that you will agree that they all look amazing. We must extend a huge thank you to Mrs Lyon and Mrs Lovell along with the amazing parent/nanny helpers that joined us on the day - we could not have done this without your help!

16th September 2024 - Outdoor PE
Year 5 have been making the most of the weather during their outdoor PE sessions. The focus for the term is tag rugby and, so far, they have looked at refining passing and moving to create an attack that results in a try as well as exploring different passing styles (miss pass), which can be used to outwit defenders to score a try. It is great to see how much effort they are all putting in. Well done Year 5!
